Wheel alignment - why bother?

A One Tyres - Thursday, February 07, 2019

We are all keen to spend as little as possible on our new tyres, but skimping on the “extras” can be a false economy.  So is wheel alignment an extra that can maximise the value of your spend?

Without a doubt the answer is yes!

There are at least four great reasons to avail of this little extra:

  • It helps ensure even tyre tread so prolonging the life of your tyre
  • It reduces uneven wear on car parts so helping to reduce expensive repairs
  • It improves vehicle handling
  • (Best of all) it maximises fuel consumption

What is wheel alignment?

It is an adjustment of your vehicle’s suspension parts to be fully aligned as per the manufacturer’s specification.  In A One Tyres we do this using a computer system to ensure the alignment is an accurate as possible.

When should I get wheels aligned?

You know you need your wheels aligned when the car pulls to one side or the other when travelling in a straight road.  Hitting a pot-hole or kerb can knock out your wheel alignment.  And you should always get your wheels aligned when you make a new tyre purchase.  In A One Tyres we recommend you get your wheels aligned at least once a year, whether you have made a new tyre purchase or not.

Does this not come as standard when purchasing tyres?

Wheel alignment is not standard with your tyre purchase.  Once you have the information on why you should take the time and expense with wheel alignment, you decide if you want to make this purchase.  Our reception staff will be glad to help with any further information.

However, balancing your tyres does come as standard.   Wheel balancing is a different operation which ensures smooth running of your tyres without vibration.

How long will wheel alignment take?

It usually takes about 30 minutes to carry out wheel alignment.  You can enjoy a free cup of coffee while you wait.  In the long run it is well worth the extra expense.

Winter tyres anyone?

A One Tyres - Friday, January 04, 2019

As the weather turns a little more chilly in the mornings and the days get noticeably shorter, our minds turn to those sharp frosts, icy rain showers and possible snow showers in the coming months.

You may have all weather tyres on your vehicle which will undoubtedly see you through those cold commutes, but in the event of icy roads or snowy conditions winter tyres may mean the difference between an accident or not.  When compared with the stopping distance of a summer or all-weather tyre, the braking

winter drivingdistance of a winter tyre (dependent on the speed of the car and the condition of the road) is up to 10% shorter - that is around two vehicle lengths.

In the early years of winter tyre development winter tyres tended to be more expensive than the equivalent summer or all-season tyres.   This is no longer the case.  The cost of winter tyres is comparable to other tyres, and with the added grip in cold and icy conditions, they may well save you more than the cost of the tyres themselves.

An unexpected bump in the road - the Northern Ireland pot-hole

A One Tyres - Tuesday, June 05, 2018

You won’t have to ponder too long before you remember the last pot-hole you just managed to avoid! But if you were unfortunate enough to drive into one there are a few things you should do:

  • Report the pot-hole
  • Get your car tyres aligned

Reporting the pot-hole

Here is a handy link to report the pothole to TransportNI:  Report a pothole

If enough people report the pot-hole there is a better chance it will be filled in!  There is a whole other debate about the quality of pot-hole fills, but getting them filled in some form helps reduce damage to vehicles.

Get your tyres aligned

Whether it is a pot-hole, or an "inconvenient" kerb you have hit, you could well have put your vehicle tyres out of alignment. Getting your tyres aligned will save uneven tyre wear and be a cost saving in the long run.

In the meantime, drive safely, preferably around the pot-holes that have become a scourge on the Northern Ireland roads this winter.

A footnote

The moneysavingexpert.com website put together an article with tips on how to claim if your tyre and/or rim are damaged driving into a pot-hole, it’s worth a read.

The ‘gen’ on nitrogen versus oxygen in your tyres

A One Tyres - Thursday, June 15, 2017

We are sometimes not too good at letting our customers know about the ‘new and cool’ in the tyre industry. A lot of people in Northern Ireland have never heard of inflating their tyres with nitrogen so I thought I’d give you the “gen” and you can make up your own mind.

How is your tyre inflated?

Currently most tyres are inflated using ordinary air which is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% other gases. So is there any benefit in using pure nitrogen to inflate your tyres? The aircraft and motorsport industry have been doing this for years as the preferred gas in their tyres, so why? Well, mainly this is because it improves fire safety when flying at high altitudes with tyres stored in wings or in the fuselage. Of course fire safety is also paramount at high speeds in motor sports. But in reality the reason Formula One uses nitrogen is because it is easier and more reliable than using an air compressor.

Does nitrogen inflation make any difference?

But what about the gas that inflates your car tyres on your daily commute, or your trip to the shops, or the school run? Some experts say that filling your car tyres with nitrogen mainly does two things:

It eliminates moisture

this can reduce rust on wheels, which isn’t a huge issue on cars in normal use, but may be an advantage on work vehicles exposed to high levels of moisture. Moisture in any tyre will eventually cause rust on steel rims or corrosion on alloy rims which can lead to a leak. This leads to poor handling, increased fuel consumption, and uneven wear.

It keeps tyres inflated for longer

it replaces smaller oxygen molecules with larger nitrogen molecules reducing the rate at which compressed gas is lost through tyre walls. In theory that means that a tyre filled with nitrogen retains optimal pressure longer, leading to more uniform tyre wear and improved fuel consumption.

What should you do?

Clearly these sound like good arguments, but to be honest, keeping a regular eye on your tyre pressure, no matter what’s in the tyre may be all you need to do. In A One Tyres we have calibrated air-line gauges for measuring tyre pressure accurately. If you do your own checks, make sure you use a gauge that will give you correct pressure readings.

What can we do for you?

A One Tyres offers a nitrogen tyre inflation service. But no matter what floats your boat, or rather what inflates your tyres, we recommend you check your tyre pressure regularly (about every two weeks) to help maximise tyre wear, ensure passenger safety and improve fuel consumption.
Feel free to drop in on your way passed our Dromore depot and we will check your tyre pressures free of charge. If you like the idea of nitrogen inflation just ask, whatever your preferred -gen for tyre inflation we are here to help.
