Budget tyres versus brand tyres

A One Tyres - Wednesday, November 06, 2013
Everyone wants to make the most economical tyre purchase possible.  But economy may not always come at the cheapest price.  When considering which tyre to purchase there are multiple factors to consider:
  • How many miles do I do?
  • What kind of driver am I?
  • Do I use the brake a lot?
  • What are the road conditions like? – do I need winter or summer tyres?
  • What price do I put on safety?

The answers to these kinds of questions can be different for everyone.  The tyres we would recommend for commercial drivers who do lots of miles might be different from the driver who uses the car for short runs around town, to school or the shops.

The experts have spent plenty of time and money considering just these questions.  Tyre manufacturers like Continental, Michelin and Pirelli spend millions carrying out all sorts of tests to establish what difference it makes when you buy a cheap budget tyre in preference to the more expensive brand name tyres.

What do the experts have to say?

In tests on cheap tyre imports from the Far East, tyre manufacturer, Continental said “we were expecting the bargain tyres to fall short, but we weren’t prepared for just how wide the gap was”.

Continental invited journalists to test budget tyres on a completely wet surface against Continental branded tyres.  In her blog, Continental’s Laura Hardy writes “The verdicts were unanimous:  the dangers posed by the cheaper tyres on a soaking surface were far greater than any benefits derived from any potential savings they offer.”  See the full story in her July 2013 blog article:

Pirelli tyres have also been tested by the top auto magazines.  Check out the results.

For many people purchasing tyres can be a stressful experience.  We at A One want to take the stress out of this for you.  For free advice on the tyre most suited to your needs simply call in at our Dromore depot, or ring us on 028 9269 9107, or complete an online contact form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.  We won’t insist you buy brand name tyres, we have both premium and budget tyres in stock, but we will present the options for you to make an informed decision on your tyre purchase.

We look forward to helping you make the right tyre purchase for you.

Cold weather tyres - to buy or not to buy

A One Tyres - Thursday, October 31, 2013

So the clocks went back last weekend, the days and nights are getting chillier and everyone keeps mentioning Christmas, the countdown begins. ...an invite to the A One 'Tyre Hotel'

The last few winters have proved that a little time spent considering the type of tyres you have on your vehicle just might pay dividends in avoiding an accident and giving you peace of mind for getting around over the chilly winter months.

If you were caught out by an icy slope on your daily commute last year you may well already have invested in a set of winter tyres.  For anyone else, it might be worth considering a few of the advantages of changing to winter tyres for the cold weather period.

Any time the temperature dips below 7 degrees Celsius you are better off on winter tyres.

What is the difference between summer and winter tyres?

Winter tyres do not harden as much as regular tyres in cold temperatures so they have increased grip on the road.  The tyre manufacturer, Continental says “A vehicle fitted with winter tyres will come to standstill on a snow-covered road (from a speed of just 30mph) after 35 metres – with normal tyres the braking distance required is a further 8 metres (43 metres). That is another two car lengths.”

So why bother with winter tyres?

Anyone who has driven with winter tyres in the cold weather will have noticed the improved driveability of your car.  There is improved grip on the road.  You still need to be careful in icy weather, but there is definitely less skidding round, more control and a better chance of being able to make it to your destination without incident.

After all, another 2 car lengths can be the difference between a collision or not.

Will my winter tyres wear quicker than my regular tyres?

Due to the special rubber compound used in winter tyres, contrary to what you might think, they do not wear quicker than regular tyres and have the advantage of improving driving safety in icy, slushy and even wet conditions.

What if I have nowhere to store my regular tyres?

A One Tyres offer a service whereby we will store your regular tyres when you purchase your winter tyres from us.  We will change the tyres back to your regular tyres when you call back with us at the end of the winter.  We call this the Tyre Hotel’.  Give your regular tyres a break in A One while your winter tyres take the strain.

Winter tyres - a few things to keep in mind

A One Tyres - Thursday, October 31, 2013

Winter is almost here so don’t forget to check the following before you drive in the winter months: 7 things to remember to check before winter

  • Always ensure your windows are clear and defrosted before putting your vehicle in motion
  • Check all bulbs are working and clear of dirt
  • Check your wipers work effectively and your car is topped up with plenty of screen wash.  Avoid using your wipers until your windscreen is clear of ice to prevent damage to your wipers.
  • Carry spare de-icer in your glove compartment.
  • In severe weather you may need to carry an emergency kit, include things like a rug, flask of coffee and some snack bars, also a rubber mat to put on the road for increased grip, a shovel and not forgetting your mobile phone to call for help.  Consider delaying or cancelling your journey in very bad weather.
  • Regularly check your tyre pressures (this advice applies no matter what the weather.)
  • Consider using our Tyre Hotel (see my winter tyre blog) to store your regular tyres when you purchase winter tyres from A One Tyres

Please note, we carry stocks of headlamp bulbs and wipers as well as winter tyres.  We will do a free winter tyre check if you call in with us in our Dromore depot.

Wrap up well, leave plenty of time for your journey and have safe motoring this winter.  We are here to help.  For advice on winter tyres call me on 028 9269 9107.
